Senior Solutions Architect — Mainframe & APEX Modernisation
Working time: 32 hours, preference for 40 hours
Role overview
You will lead analysis, discovery and planning to migrate a portfolio of legacy line-of-business systems (Oracle APEX / PL/SQL and mainframe workloads) into cloud-native Java / Spring Boot services with an Angular front end on AWS EKS. The work emphasises investigative analysis, architectural judgment and ownership rather than day-to-day build leadership.
Primary focus
- Assessment and discovery of legacy applications, integrations and embedded business logic.
- Reverse-engineering Oracle APEX and mainframe code (COBOL / PL‑I, JCL, VSAM, CICS) in partnership with mainframe SMEs to recover true system behaviour and data lineage.
- Defining the target architecture, migration patterns and a phased, risk-mitigated roadmap for migration and decommissioning.
Key responsibilities
Assessment & discovery (primary)
- Inventory applications, map data flows and integrations, and document undocumented business logic.
- Reverse-engineer APEX pages, processes, computations, validations, shared components and server-side PL/SQL.
- Analyse mainframe programs, batch flows and transactions with SMEs to recover business rules and lineage.
- Classify workloads (retire, rehost, replatform, refactor/re‑architect) based on complexity, coupling and risk.
- Produce artefacts: application inventory, dependency and data-flow maps, integration catalogue, effort/complexity estimates.
- Use AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) and Database Migration Service (DMS) to assess Oracle→PostgreSQL conversion effort and surface blockers.
Target architecture & migration strategy
- Define end-to-end target architecture for Java / Spring Boot microservices with Angular front ends on AWS EKS.
- Design scalable, resilient, secure cloud-native architectures aligned with the AWS Well‑Architected Framework and select appropriate services (Aurora PostgreSQL, EKS, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, Lambda, S3).
- Develop reusable migration patterns, reference architectures and blueprints (including strangler‑fig pattern) for consistent approaches.
- Define data and logic migration approaches: schema conversion, relocation of PL/SQL logic into services, and replatforming of batch jobs.
- Sequence migration into waves with explicit dependencies and a phased roadmap ensuring business continuity.
Mainframe migration & decommissioning
- Determine per-workload strategy (rehost / replatform / refactor / retire) balancing risk, cost and decommissioning timeline.
- Plan orderly retirement: data archival and retention (including legal/GDPR considerations), reference-data and history strategy, and clean exit criteria for parallel runs.
- Map dependency webs to ensure nothing is switched off while still depended upon.
- Provide inputs for decommissioning prioritisation (MIPS / licence / support-contract impacts and capacity release).
Behavioural parity, testing & risk
- Define how behavioural equivalence will be established: characterization/golden‑master testing, shadow running, output reconciliation.
- Own a programme-level risk register: identify and mitigate technical risks, hidden dependencies and data-integrity concerns.
- Define cutover and rollback safety strategies for reversible waves.
Stakeholder engagement & documentation
- Work with business stakeholders, product owners and engineering teams to align migration goals with business priorities.
- Communicate complex architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences, up to CTO/CIO level.
- Produce and maintain Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), reference documentation and roadmaps.
- Partner with security, DevOps and data teams to ensure compliance, governance and operational readiness.
Delivery enablement & governance (secondary)
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to delivery teams during implementation.
- Define standards for Spring Boot services, CI/CD (GitHub Actions), testing strategy and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform / AWS CDK).
- Run architecture reviews and approve delivery designs; embed security posture (GHAS, Wiz or equivalent) and observability (Prometheus, Grafana) expectations into target patterns.

- Comfortable using LLM / agentic tooling — including the internal accelerators we provide — to speed up legacy comprehension, translation and parity testing, and ideas on improving them
- Solid experience designing Spring Boot microservices and REST APIs as modernisation targets
- Hands-on with core services (EKS, Aurora / RDS, API Gateway, SQS / SNS, Lambda, IAM, VPC). AWS Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) preferred
- Relational migration experience (e.g. Oracle → PostgreSQL / Aurora); familiarity with AWS SCT and DMS
- Strangler fig, domain-driven decomposition, anti-corruption layers and incremental cutover
- Practical experience proving equivalence between legacy and modernised systems (characterization testing, shadow running, reconciliation)
- GitHub Actions, Docker, and Kubernetes / EKS
- Terraform and / or AWS CDK
- IAM, VPC design and secrets management (e.g. AWS Secrets Manager); awareness of supply-chain and cloud-posture tooling (GHAS, Wiz or equivalent)
- Design-level understanding of Angular as the target UI, enough to scope APEX UI rebuilds — hands-on Angular development is not required
